What was life at sea like in the early modern period? How did life on Royal Navy ships function and how was it characterized? These are some of the questions that fascinate historian PD Dr. Patrick Schmidt and that he is trying to answer in his research project funded by the Gerda Henkel Foundation. In doing so, it is striking that our ideas are shaped, among other things, by the fact that intensive research and publications have been made primarily about mutinies - such as the probably most famous mutiny on the Bounty in 1789. However, Patrick Schmidt knows that it was already unusual at that time for the crew to rebel against the captain in this way, so that he uses, for example, court-martial records in order to be able to make statements about life, the dynamics and disobedience on the high seas.
