Even today, in many African societies, the colonial era is not only a constant in their awareness of history, but indeed a dominant feature. To date, knowledge of their own history before the colonial conquests has been the preserve of a small number of historians. Fondation AfricAvenir International has made it its objective to promote and nurture Africans’ awareness of their own precolonial history, amongst other things, in the form of a graduate school for young African historians. In his inaugural lecture, and referencing the “Kouroukan Fouga”, the charter of the kingdom of Mali dating from 1236, historian Prof. Blaise Alfred Ngando will be explaining that political systems in Africa have their own history, one that stretches back to a time long before European colonization.
