Online and in-person conference in Madrid’s Museo Arqueológico Nacional on the relationship between Christian communities and law in the medieval Islamic world. The conference is organized by the members of the Gerda Henkel Project “Christian Society under Muslim Rule: Canon Collections from Medieval Spain” with support from the Gerda Henkel Stiftung and the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia and the collaboration of the Museo Arqueológico Nacional, which will also offer a paper as an open lecture to the general public through its networks.
The conference will focus on the Arabic-speaking Christian communities of al-Andalus and other geographical settings where religious minorities shared similar social and legal conditions. Topics of special interest are the frameworks for the negotiation of Christian law with the Islamic community and the different perspectives offered by the different thematic books of canon law on the way of life of Andalusi and Middle Eastern Christians. Presentations will pay attention to the linguistic and material aspects of the historical sources, such as the elaboration of legal manuscripts in the scriptoria, and devotional spaces where archaeology has an important contribution. In addition, the conference will explore sociocultural and theological topics, including the questions of purity that concerned food and liturgy as well as the complex issue of the modification of theological concepts by Christians in contact with Islamic theology. Finally, the conference will cover the self-administration of Christian communities at the intersection of the authorities and norms of two different political-religious institutions (Christian and Islamic).
