The fourth section of the symposium “All the Beauty of the World. The Western Market for non-European Artefacts (18th-20th century)” focuses on the key actors in the Western market for non-European artefacts, their biographies of acquisition, their interwoven networks, and the political circumstances under which they operated. By taking the example of C.A. Lamare-Picquot (Nélia Dias, Lissabon) and Emile Guimet (Ting Chang, Nottingham), the first two talks question to what extent the biographies of individuals influenced both the market and the formation of private and public collections. Masako Yamamoto (Kyoto) provides a counter example, examining Japanese dealers operating on the European market.
