In the Lüneburg Heath, between grazing flocks of sheep and rolling hills, lies a very special place: the Stone Age cemetery "Oldendorfer Totenstatt". Since the Neolithic Age, it has served as a cemetery and place of worship for the prehistoric inhabitants of northern Europe. In tumuli and megalithic sites, people buried their dead there for generations. What made the place so special that it was visited again and again over such a long time? That's what archaeologist Dr Julia Menne is trying to find out. Supported by the Gerda Henkel Foundation, she is investigating the changes in human-environment relations in prehistoric societies. The Oldendorf burial site, with its unique archaeological density, is an example of two decisive changes in Central European prehistory.
