The First World War saw a myriad of military innovations that changed the face of warfare forever: machine guns, tanks, poison gas and submarines. With the declaration of unrestricted submarine warfare by the German Empire in 1917, France and Great Britain were faced with serious problems. All the waters around Great Britain became battle grounds – including the English Channel, across which soldiers, weapons and other goods were shipped. How practical it would have been to be able to transport material and people safely under the sea in a tunnel. During the peace negotiations in Versailles, the plan for the construction of a Channel Tunnel was once again put on the table. But not everyone was enthusiastic about it.
