According to Prof. Hans Henning Hahn, stereotypes are generalisations applied to groups of people that indicate a positive or negative value judgement. In the 1990s the professor emeritus founded a centre for historical stereotype research at Oldenburg University. Art historian Dr. Rima Chahine works at the centre. In her research project she explores poster art in the Orient and Occident in the second half of the 20th century with an emphasis on advertising posters. Which stereotypes do the posters reveal, and which prejudices do they indicate? And was there a dialogue between the poster art of both “worlds”? She answers these questions in the video.
