The German Forest was a place of longing for the followers of Romanticism. In their imagination, it was a reflection of the human emotional world, a dreamy refuge away from urbanity and industrialisation. For Carl Alexander Simon, however, the forest had another function, as it provided material resources for the construction of the German colony in Chile. The similarity between the Chilean forests and his German homeland inspired the painter. Once he came across oak trees there, it was clear to him that this country was only waiting for the Germans.
