Owing to its location on the Moselle, the city of Trier is inextricably linked with wine production. But what are the historical origins of this connection? What economic importance did wine cultivation have for the city’s development? The city’s interest and loans register allows conclusions to be drawn about how economic and staffing factors were entwined in the area of wine production in the Middle Ages. Admittedly, wine was already grown in the region at the time of the Romans, but in the late Middle Ages in particular it was of crucial importance. In the 12th and 13th centuries favourable climatic and social conditions allowed for a flourishing export industry, which relied on the leasing of winegrowing areas. Historian Prof. Lukas Clemens was able to gain new insights into the precise developments and the problems arising in the early 14th century.
