Four-thousand-year-old administration documents such as the Sumerians’ lists of wages, tax registers, and lists of goods are amongst the favourite reading material of Dr. Sergio Alivernini, expert in ancient Oriental cultures. For him they are the key to researching mathematics in Mesopotamia. This requires special knowledge of the cuneiform script, which Sumerian officials used for writing bureaucratic texts. These texts are written on clay tablets that are exhibited in several museums today – Dr. Sergio Alivernini’s preferred workplace.
