The Salt Man Project

Experts | Episode 5

Before the salt mummies from the mine in Zanjān can be presented to the public in an exhibition, these unique finds are examined in more detail, cleaned and preserved at the Research Centre for Conservation of Cultural Relics in Tehran. Some of the finds also have to be reconstructed, since not all the individual parts have stood the test of time in some cases. With the ceramics in particular, which boast a specific form and structure, in-depth expertise is required.

The project
The aim of the project is the long-term preservation and presentation of the salt mummies, their tools and equipment, and the other largely organic finds from the excavation. In addition, an up-to-date conservation and monitoring concept of the unique archaeological legacy is to be developed and a selection of the finds restored and presented to an Iranian and German public. Partners of the project are the German Mining Museum in Bochum, Ruhr University Bochum, Romano-Germanic Central Museum in Mainz, Archaeological Museum Frankfurt, Natural History Museum Vienna, Iran Cultural Heritage Organisation Zanjān, Zolfaghari Museum Zanjān and National Museum of Iran in Tehran.
