For Alessandro della Latta it is not the artwork alone that is important. This is because the art historian concerns himself with artists’ signatures. And they are just as diverse as the artworks themselves. On the one hand they form part of a painting, but on the other they are a microcosm of their own. It is not rare for them to be well hidden or even incorporated into the theme of the work: Everyday objects that bear writing like crates, ships or knife blades provide information about the work’s authorship. Finally, from the 16th century onwards signatures became a seal of authenticity and were consequently repeatedly forged as of the 18th century so as to increase a painting’s value by adding names like “Rembrandt”. At the start of a new video series, della Latta provides some initial insights into the world of artist signatures.
