A key problem that emerges when appraising the colonial images is that they suffer from an imbalance of power. After all, during colonialism Africans were often photographed without their permission and almost exclusively by the colonising Germans. In the research project, Prof. Jürgen Zimmerer explains in the general interview, the Hamburg academic and head of the research centre “Hamburg’s (post-)colonial legacy” works with young artists from Namibia. In the interview Prof. Zimmerer also talks about his personal fascination with the topic, the challenges and the photographic motifs.
