Towards the end of the third century BCE larger nomadic tribal groups developed in the north of China. Of key significance was the multiethnic confederation of early Asiatic Huns referred to in written Chinese sources as the Xiongnu, who spread into Central Asia and southern Siberia and became powerful opponents of the Chinese Han dynasty.
