The Research Project
Breisgau is one of Germany’s oldest regions. In the Middle Ages, princes, towns and cloisters capitalized on the flourishing trade in the Rhine plane and the profitable silver mines in the Black Forest. Accordingly, as the main sources of financial income these were worthy of the highest protection. It is therefore all the more astonishing that today in Breisgau there remains so few examples of the most important and visible manifestation of protection and power – castles.
