Work that wins the Prize: "Scherben von Prora" photo exhibition

"Scherben von Prora" is a photo exhibition conceived by German artist Markus Georg Reintgen. Prora, on the Isle of Ruegen, is a kilometer-long monument of National Socialism architecture, built by the Nazis as a tourist structure based on the motto "Strength through Joy", conceived as a retreat where the "Aryan" working class could go to have fun and exercise in order to reaffirm their racial identity and build themselves into devoted Nazis.
The artist has been working since 2008, documenting the changes that the venue has undergone. The Prora architecture complex on the Island of Rügen was left unfinished by the National Socialists and then found intermediate military use in East Germany. Recently, it has been undergoing development into a residential and hotel complex since 2010. Markus Georg Reintgen documents this transformation in his new photographic works, in which he captures the buildings from a very low angle. These works call to mind the aesthetics of Neues Sehen (New Vision) as well as of constructivist photography—based on precisely that avant-garde photography of the 1920s and 30s in Germany whose repre-sentatives were oppressed and persecuted by the National Socialist regime. The analogue black-and-white photographs, which were taken with a historical camera, are constructed predominantly as pairs of images. Markus Georg Reintgen’s preparatory working drawing that begins the series of images in the catalogue provides insight into the artist’s analytical conceptual process, which is based on the construction of perspectival "sight lines". The work has had already significant impact so far, with well over 15 exhibitions. The work is significant for the local community but also beyond because it is a one-of-a-kind monu-ment. The work informs, enhances understanding, helps to keep a problematic past in the present.
